Katie is so beside herself to meet the kittens she begins to howl with joy, and scares them away. Later, after she has calmed down, she approaches the kittens again. First her tail wags ecstatically, and then her entire body begins to quiver with excitement. After each failed attempt to calmly introduced herself, Katie retreats to her red pillow bed. The sadness she feels is wonderfully captured in Himmelman’s expressive illustrations. Finally her dreams come true when the kittens seek her out, and a wonderful friendship begins to develop.

If I Built a Car by Chris Van Dusen 2007
The creative mind of a young boy is given full reign in this book about the power of imagination. He describes in wonderful detail the car that he would fashion. Moon Rabbit by Natalie Russell 2009

Looking For A Moose by Phyllis Root, illustrated by Randy Cecil 2006
A group of friends discovers that searching for a moose can be quite strenuous, and harder that they thought. They traipse through the “treesy-breezy woods”, and a “slurpy-glurpy swamp”, but it’s just no use. Your child will love spotting the knobby knees and pointed antlers of the moose as the characters in the book walk past unawares.
Cecil’s illustrations are warm, and engaging. This fun story may become a favorite in your home, as it is in ours.

Backyard animals, and the seasons they nestle in, are deftly explored in this informative book. As one season merges into the next, the diurnal and nocturnal rituals of animals are shown.
