Katie Loves the Kittens

Katie Loves the Kittens by John Himmelman 2008

“Today was the most exciting day in Katie’s whole life! Sara Ann had brought home three little kittens.”

The unlikely love between a curious dog (Katie), and three bewildered kittens sets the stage for this endearing story. Katie is so beside herself to meet the kittens she begins to howl with joy, and scares them away. Later, after she has calmed down, she approaches the kittens again. First her tail wags ecstatically, and then her entire body begins to quiver with excitement. After each failed attempt to calmly introduced herself, Katie retreats to her red pillow bed. The sadness she feels is wonderfully captured in Himmelman’s expressive illustrations. Finally her dreams come true when the kittens seek her out, and a wonderful friendship begins to develop.

If I Built a Car

If I Built a Car by Chris Van Dusen 2007

The creative mind of a young boy is given full reign in this book about the power of imagination. He describes in wonderful detail the car that he would fashion. He covers safety, sensory details, and snacks. He would not be deterred by water or sky, making the possibilities for adventure limitless. The confidence in the young boys demeanor, and the shocked expression on his dad (and dog’s) face expand on the humor of the story.

Red Sings from Treetops

The richness of color is explored in this poetically whimsical book. The apparel of the lady on each page matches the colors of the seasonal display, and her hat-wearing dog many times rolls along beside her on wheels. The senses are made more magical during each season with the rustle of brown autumn leaves, the shout of yellow light, and the clink of white ice cubes. I am convinced that this book, with saturated scenes from Zagrenski and luscious text by Sidman, will satiate your reading needs.

"Fall smells purple: old leaves, crushed berries, squishy plums with worms in them. Purple: the smell of all things mixed together."

Moon Rabbit

Moon Rabbit by Natalie Russell 2009

A petite White Rabbit loves her life in the city, but feels lonely, and wants to find a rabbit friend to share the wonders of the city with. She is drawn into the city park by the sound of beautiful music. A Brown Rabbit is playing a song on his guitar. The two bunnies cavort through the park and have a delightful time together. But soon White Rabbit is missing the bustle of the city. Her farewell is not a sad one, because another visit with Brown Rabbit is forthcoming, this time on her turf.

The joys of friendship, and the importance of being oneself is explored here in a sweet and subtle way. Perhaps even more memorable are the lush and dreamy illustrations by Russell.

Looking for a Moose

Looking For A Moose by Phyllis Root, illustrated by Randy Cecil 2006

A group of friends discovers that searching for a moose can be quite strenuous, and harder that they thought. They traipse through the “treesy-breezy woods”, and a “slurpy-glurpy swamp”, but it’s just no use. Your child will love spotting the knobby knees and pointed antlers of the moose as the characters in the book walk past unawares.

Cecil’s illustrations are warm, and engaging. This fun story may become a favorite in your home, as it is in ours.
